8th May 1963 was the day the ice hockey giant Rick Zombo was born, Des Plaines, Illinois, being the town where the big hockey hero took his first breath. Out of more than thirty years as one of the class of the highest order ice hockey players, Rick played initially pro-level hockey with Austin Mavericks of USHL and was drafted to Detroit Red Wings in the 8th round of 1981 NHL Entry Draft.
Zombo also competed in college hockey with the University of North Dakota and was a member of the 1982 NCAA National Championship team. He accumulated 63 points in his three-year stint with the Fighting Sioux and was a third-year team captain.
His own professional playing career was 12 years as a NHL defenceman with the Boston Bruins, St. Louis Blues, and Detroit Red Wings. During his 652 regular-season games, Zombo scored 24 goals and 130 assists and played 60 playoff contests as well.
Once he retired as a professional hockey player, Zombo became a coach and left behind a legacy. He initially began as a head coach at the NAHL St. Louis Sting and later coached with the USHL Heartland Eagles. In 2008, he became an assistant coach at Lindenwood University and contributed very significantly to the team winning their ACHA Division I National Championships.
Zombo became head coach in 2010 and took Lindenwood to numerous national tournaments. He took the team to NCAA Division I and won some incredible games, including an almost miraculous game against Air Force in 2022. His time at Lindenwood came to an end in March of 2024 when the school launched a national search to find his replacement.
