Deion, a devoted player in the Blue Island Men’s Baseball League, was taken away from this world, and a gap has been left in the heart of all those who knew him. His untimely death has surprised his family, friends, and teammates, who now grieve the loss of an extraordinary person whose life was an inspiration and a joy to so many.

The Blue Island Men’s Baseball League confirmed the devastating news in a heartfelt statement, saying, “Our hearts go out to the friends, family, and teammates of Deion Cozart. By all accounts, he was a player who made a huge impression on everyone in the Chicago men’s baseball community. Let’s hold our friends, family, and teammates closer. One of his oldest friends, Jarrett Byrd, spoke to his sadness in a poignant tribute. “I’m hurt, G. I don’t know what to say for real. Growing up in Rogers, Loyola Park memories, varsity basketball at Lake View, watching you be lead pitcher for our school, tearing the Promontory up, my brother giving us a ride to the crib after basketball practice…. I’m hurt, Deion Cozart. What hurts the most is that even as you got older, you never pushed me aside like a shorty. You always made sure I was included. I couldn’t even sleep because this is so wack.”

Deion went to the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff and was a proud alumnus of Lake View High School. He was a sportsman and took part in sports ranging from high school basketball and baseball to his significant contribution to Chicago baseball culture.
