Tragic Accident on Highway 106

The fatal crash occurred when a 2016 Chevrolet Silverado attempted to pass a tractor, colliding head-on with the 2014 Jeep carrying Ramsey and her teammates. The Jeep and Silverado then struck the tractor, causing it to overturn.

Ramsey and a 68-year-old Pittsfield woman were pronounced dead at the scene. Two of Ramsey’s teammates and both drivers suffered serious injuries and were airlifted to area hospitals. Illinois State Police cited the Silverado’s driver, 72-year-old Eric Harris of Springfield, for improper lane usage.

Community in Mourning

Pikeland staff and students are deeply saddened by Ramsey’s passing. Interim Superintendent Todd Fox expressed condolences, saying, “There are no words that can fully express the sorrow and pain we feel as a school community. We grieve together and stand united as a school family.”

Due to a winter storm, classes were canceled on Wednesday, but grief counseling and support services will be available to students and community members starting Thursday.

Chris Duerr KHQA Sports Director posted “Nothing is more telling of the integrity of the culture in Tri-State Girls Basketball than when you can call two of the most successful coaches in area History on one of the saddest and most uncomfortable days we’ve ever experienced around here… And Matt Long and Eric Orne’s first words are: No, I’ll come to you to talk about Reese Ramsey. These men are better humans than they are coaches.”

Honoring Reese Ramsey’s Legacy

As the Pittsfield Saukees continue their season, Ramsey’s presence will remain in the hearts of her teammates and fans. She will be remembered for her dedication, joy for the game, and the impact she made in the basketball community.

The Pittsfield community will stay Saukee Strong, keeping Reese Ramsey’s memory alive through the love and passion she brought to the game and her school.
